How to write good essays

During a student’s academic life, essay writing is a necessary part of the school life. Most students find writing academic essays tedious due to the vast numbers of papers required from them by their professors. However, writing an essay follows a very formulaic process, disregarding the more advanced academic papers, which will be the subject of a future discussion. A basic college or high school essay has the following sections:

  1. Paragraph 1: Introduction
  2. Paragraph 2: Body 1
  3. Paragraph 3: Body 2
  4. Paragraph 4: Body 3
  5. Paragraph 5: Conclusion

This formula structure is maintained to allow for a standardized structure for essays, which lets users quickly find the information they need from any essay. Let’s break down the essay writing process below:

The introduction

The primary purpose of the introduction is to present the author’s main argument, also known as the thesis. However, the introduction serves a greater purpose than just introducing the thesis statement. An excellent introduction should start with a hook that helps to grab the readers attention and sparks their interest in the paper. An example of a hook includes relevant quotations (e.g., “No man is an island.”), or surprising statistics (e.g., “3 out of four people.”).

Only then should the essay progress towards the thesis statement. The thesis should be a one-sentence clear explanation of the author’s position which leaves no room for ambiguity in the reader’s mind.

Following the thesis statement, the author should provide a summarized outline of the examples that will be used to support the position chosen for the rest of the paper. This serves to let the reader know what ideas the essay will explore and also helps the reader understand the main idea of the essay better. The last sentence should serve to usher the reader into the first paragraph.

A good rule of the thumb is that the introduction does not need to be more than 4 or 5 sentences. Also, essay writing dictates avoiding passive voice since active voice is more compelling and attention grabbing.  A lot of effort for the essay should be directed towards the introduction as it is the only chance to impress the reader, and first impressions count. Personal pronouns should also be avoided unless the essay requires it (e.g. a narrative essay). It is also important to consider the formatting style for the essays, as some formatting styles have rather strict instructions on how the introductory paragraph should look like (e.g. some may require the thesis statement be the last paragraph).

The body paragraphs

The middle paragraphs in the essay are known as the body paragraphs, and they expand the examples that support your thesis. The paragraphs should follow each other from the strongest example to the least relevant, unless there is a need that might need the arrangement to be different (e.g. the topic may require the cases arranged in chronological order ).

The paragraph should explain and flesh out the example to enable the reader to understand the context of the case. A good rule of the thumb is to provide 4 or 5 relevant facts about the model to bring the examples context to the reader. The author should further explain why the example is relevant to the topic under discussion. Finally, the paragraph should explain how the example chosen contributes and proves the thesis statement. The most important part which can not be overstated is showing how the example proves the thesis statement.

The examples chosen should not be too general and should have direct connections to the thesis statement. Also, the essay should have transitions from one paragraph to the other. The author should tie the different paragraphs together by using transitional phrases such as “first,” “secondly,” “on the other hand” among many others. The author should maintain consistency when tying the paragraphs together. For example, if the author used first in the first paragraph, then the second paragraph should naturally use “secondly” or if the author used “on the one hand” then “on the other hand” should follow accordingly.

.The conclusion

Although the conclusion paragraph comes at the end of your essay, it should not be seen as an afterthought. As the final paragraph it represents your last chance to make your case and, as such, should follow an extremely rigid format. A helpful way to consider the conclusion as a second introduction since it shares a lot of similar features with it.

Valid conclusions open with a concluding transition (“in conclusion,” “in the end,” etc.) and an allusion to the “hook” used in the introductory paragraph. After that, you should immediately provide a restatement of your thesis statement.

This should be the fourth or fifth time you have repeated your thesis so while you should use a variety of word choice in the body paragraphs it is a acceptable idea to use some (but not all) of the original language you used in the introduction. This echoing effect not only reinforces your argument but also ties it nicely to the second key element of the conclusion: a brief (two or three words is enough) review of the three main points from the body of the paper.

Having done all of that, the final element – and final sentence in your essay – should be a “global statement” or “call to action” that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end.

Essay writing is not a difficult process, and a bit of effort should increase your grades significantly.
